Rock My Soul ft. Zach Person [INTERVIEW]

Rebecca Potzner

Like recycled trends, the question “Is Rock Dead” always seems to continuously resurface. The cries of a distorted guitar and Zach Person’s smooth bluesy vocals pierce through the speakers and I can’t help but think Rock IS alive and it is finding its own way to thrive. Person took an Elvis classic, flipped it on it’s head and completely made it his own with a groovy, fuzz heavy sound.

Along with Person’s Presley cover, he recently released a full LP. The first track, ‘Can’t Stop Running’, blew me away and I knew I had to add it to our Rock My Soul playlist. So without further ado, check out my interview with Zach and give the new Rock My Soul update a listen below!

PLUS! Tune into the BANDEDPR Instagram on Monday, April 12th as Zach takes over for the day.

First off, I just want to say how incredible this LP is. Truly blown away by your artistry. Tell us about your vision behind the LP and where you found your inspiration.

ZP: Thank you! With the EP I released last March, it was very much about making a clear statement of who I was as an artist. With the new LP, I was able to explore a bit more and show different sides of myself as a songwriter. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled a lot and have experienced performing many different styles of music. Everything from rock to blues, americana, jazz, funk, and hip hop. I love to blend “the best” of all of these styles of music to make music that is really dynamic.

What does your songwriting process look like?

ZP: My songwriting process usually starts off with me going into a quiet room with no distractions. I try to limit myself to working with basic “ingredients” (my voice, an acoustic guitar, piano, etc.), and avoid brining too many elements into the song before the tune itself is actually completed. It’s my method of making sure that the songs at their core are truly solid songs that can stand on their own even in their rawest form. Then I will begin making demos and I’ll have Jake (drummer / collaborator) add in his percussive parts and give me feedback on what I’ve done thus far.

If someone only had time to listen to one song off the LP, which would you suggest?

ZP: I would tell them to listen to “Can’t Stop Running”. It’s just such an energetic song with great production and a good balance of vintage and modern sounds.

What got you into music - was there a defining moment where you said to yourself THIS is what I want to do with my life? When did you start playing guitar?

ZP: My mother was a really talented singer, and she got me listening to lots of music as a little kid. However, I didn’t really get into music myself until I was about 10 years old. I was an avid skateboarder and was exposed to heavy, alternative rock at the skateparks. That peaked my interest in guitar based music. Then when I was 11, I began taking lessons from Baxter Clement (Owner of Casino Guitars in North Carolina) and he introduced me to the blues. Once I saw people like B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan play, I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do.

You were a contestant on American Idol, what was that like? What’s one thing you learned from your experience?

ZP: Overall, it was a good experience for me. Up until that point I’d always seen myself as a guitarist first and foremost. Going on the show made me focus on myself as a singer and an all around performer before being a guitarist. I’m also glad that I left the show when I did, because I was able to be avoid getting into any “too heavy” contracts and develop naturally into the artist that I am today.

Record Label deals can sometimes be limiting to artists, but you seem to be in quite a unique position. How’s it feel to not only be Blackdenim’s flagship artist but to have complete creative control and have an equity position?

ZP: It’s definitely not a typical situation. Early on we realized that the three of us (Christopher Durst, Will Loconto, and myself) made an amazing team, and that we had the unique ability and circumstances to do something really special. With Christopher being C.E.O. and Will being the President of Recorded Music, they’ve positioned me as best as possible to be able to continue to focus on being the flagship artist and creative head of the label. There are definitely more responsibilities that I carry in being a partner with them, but it’s a good balance between the three of us and the rest of our team that we have been filling out here recently.

What artists do you have on heavy rotation as of late?

ZP: I’ve been listening to a lot of The White Stripes, Chris Stapleton, and Madison Cunningham lately! Also, my LP (haha).

As live music starts to return, who would you love to tour with?

ZP: Ooh. A dream tour would probably be one with The Black Keys, Chris Stapleton, and St. Vincent.

SOUTH OF EDEN

South of Eden (formerly Black Coffee) are: Ehab Omran [lead vocals, acoustic guitar], Justin Young [lead guitar, vocals], Tom McCullough [drums], and Nick Frantianne [bass]. The Columbus, OH quartet have already performed alongside everyone from the Foo Fighters to System of a Down, and invite you to join them on their journey of looking at rock ‘n’ roll through a modern lens.

“We want to open up the doors for rock in the modern era,” exclaims Ehab. “We want to sound the way we hear rock in our heads—vintage with a sprinkle of today. We try to give listeners the feeling of discovering the genre for the first time. We think now is the moment to be a rock band.”

The above quote truly speaks to what the Rock My Soul playlist is all about; opening up doors for new rock that pays homage to the classics. After including their work as Black Coffee and now with their new music under a new name, it was about TIME to make South of Eden the stars of Rock My Soul.

This year under Republic Records, the band released The Talk EP as well as The Talk Sessions featuring acoustic and studio performances. South of Eden took the bold move to cover Audioslave’s ‘Show Me How To Live’ and received a stamp of approval from Tom Morello himself.

If you’re up for a socially distanced show, catch South of Eden in Lexington, KY at The Burl on November 13th. Get tickets here.

Rock My Soul ft. Tribute To Eddie Van Halen

Rebecca Potzner
RMSvanhalen.jpg

"If I can help a kid discover a liking, or even a passion for music in their life, then that’s a wonderful thing." - Eddie Van Halen

With the news of guitar virtuoso, Eddie Van Halen, passing away, we felt it was only right to pay tribute.

A true legend, Eddie Van Halen was a musical pioneer, redefining the rock guitar and popularizing polyrhythm. For generations now, musicians and listeners alike have been inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s talent, passion, and innovation. EVH played a key role in my love for Rock music. Without him, there may not have been a BANDED or a Rock My Soul.

So for October’s update, we’ve kicked things off with the explosive Eruption by Van Halen and sprinkled in a few more of their tracks that showcase Eddie’s fine work on the guitar. Though he may be gone, his music will live on forever, and ever. And we’re so thankful for that. EVH FOREVER.

ARTISTS FEATURED THIS MONTH: Them Evils, Blame Candy, The Black Moods, Ayron Jones, Miley Cyrus, Reckless Love, The Blue Stones, Starbenders, The Kills, Novatines, The Living Street, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Kim Logan, and Greta Van Fleet.

Rock My Soul ft. SWEETTALKER'S 'Paradise' EP

Rebecca Potzner

SWEETTALKER

“Nashville based band, SWEETTALKER has spent the past several years touring all over the southeast and midwest US since debuting their first few singles. During this time, they garnered attention from multiple industry publications being cited as energetic, riffy, and highly entertaining. In 2019, the group turned their attention to the studio, working with producer Matt Goldman to create an impressive and ambitious debut EP.”

Comprised of David (Vocals/Guitar), Ryan (Vocals/Guitar), Hayden (Bass), and Chris (Drums).

A trip to paradise sounds quite nice, doesn’t it? Follow us. We’ll take you there…

Released just last week, Paradise is SWEETTALKER’s dreamy psychedelic-pop-rock EP. Inspired by the sounds of ELO, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles, the band re-invented their sound and found themselves progressing as a band with the creation of this 6-track EP. “Paradise is a sonic delineation, carving out a soundscape in Music City that is undeniably SWEETTALKER,” shared American Songwriter.

Narrowing it down to one favorite track seemed to be an impossible feat, so you’ll find the entire track list dispersed throughout Rock My Soul. Each song encapsulates a relatable story paired with magical musical moments that make you swoon and crave more, more, more. Keep reading for mini reviews of each track and check out the full playlist update below.

‘TOMORROW’ - Telling a very sanguine story, the opening track is a warm welcome into Paradise. ‘Tomorrow’ gives listeners a feel for the new found sound of SWEETTALKER; and let me tell you, it feels SO right.

‘GOODBYE’ - A favorite from the very start, ‘Goodbye’ was the first single to be released and set the bar HIGH. With the full band and a horn section, you can’t help but dance and sing along to this break up anthem. As a warning - It may or may not give you the courage to call up an ex and yell “I DON’T NEED YA. I CAN’T WAIT FOR YOU TO BE ON YOUR WAY, SO GOODBYE!”. Just to be safe, hide your phone and crank up the volume.

PS. the official music video for this one is so fun. Watch it here.

‘LITTLE BIRD’ - Long-standing SWEETTALKER fans can now rejoice that this gem is out in the world! A track the guys have been holding onto for quite some time, ‘Little Bird’ hands over the lead vocals to Ryan and makes it WAY too easy to picture yourself driving out to the West Coast with the top down.

‘FAR AWAY’ - Right off the bat, the guitars swoop you in. Groovy yet symphonic, ‘Far Away’ truly radiates the new psychedelic-pop-rock vibe the band now calls their own. Go a little deeper and “just let go” with the trippy official music video.

‘BORN TO LOSE’ - The heaviest track on the EP, ‘Born To Lose’ kicks off this edition of Rock My Soul. Right off the bat, the guitar comes in hot and heavy with a strong drum build. Creating a sense of suspense, ‘Born To Lose’ would be the perfect soundtrack for a chase. Think Dazed and Confused - upperclassmen running after the freshman. Tune in until the end and it truly doesn’t get better than the contrast of strong guitar riffs and rolling drums into vocal harmonizing.

‘PARADISE’ - The title track is the perfect closer and an absolute doozy. Reminiscent of The Beatles ‘Across the Universe’, the song envelopes your whole being, sweeping you off your feet into a dream-like state. You’re in the clouds. You’re on the water. You’re in Paradise. Welcome.

ARTISTS FEATURED THIS MONTH: SWEETTALKER, Nova Twins, Shiraz Lane, Joyous Wolf, The Weeks, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Kelsy Karter, The Moon City Masters, Crown Lands, Whoopie Cat, Little Triggers, Death Valley Gypsies, Dirty Shirley, and Cam Cole.

Rock My Soul ft RADKEY

Rebecca Potzner

RADKEY

“Radkey does whatever they want. Whether it's hard and fast, or slow and groovy as fuck. Radkey does whatever they want, and that's what rock and roll is all about. You can hear it in the music and it makes you want to fucking party. Radkey doesn't cater to one sound by calling themselves a "Punk Band".

Radkey is: Dee, Isaiah and Solomon. Dee, the lead singer, guitarist and the oldest of the 3, has a powerful baritone voice, badass guitar solos and an equally powerful love for Japan. Isaiah is the Bassist with a fucked up dark mind, and a sexy way with words. Solomon is the Drummer and youngest brother. He's a lover of hot sauce and video games, and he takes it seriously.

Radkey all grew up in a shitty little pink house in St. Joseph, Missouri. Homeschooled. Bored with nothing to do but listen to their Father's records and start a band. Radkey is a rock band.”

With all of the uncertainty in the air, we figured our listeners could use something familiar but with some flair. Radkey, a Rock N’ Roll trio of brothers from Missouri, recently released a cover of the Bill Withers’ classic, ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’.

If you like what you hear, check out Radkey’s online performance on August 16th for Punks for Justice. The online benefit will raise money for the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the U.S., to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.

Rock My Soul ft. Them Evils

THEM EVILS

“Classic Rock with a Modern Roll”

Their tagline says it all. Through the years, Them Evils has consistently driven the heart of rock and roll with a twist of their own. With only 3 members, Them Evils packs one hell of a punch with Jordan Griffin on Guitar/Vocals, Jake Massanari on Bass, and David Delaney on Drums.

While they’ve spent a lot of their time touring and playing festivals, it’s been about two years since we’ve heard new tunes from this trio. Now, Them Evils has come in full force with a new single titled “Where Ya Gonna Crash Tonight?”. Working with Kevin "Thrasher" Gruft (Escape The Fate) Aaron Edwards (Sick Puppies, Black Veil Brides) and producer Jim Kaufman (Danny Worsnop, The Black Moods, Night Riots), the single is upbeat, catchy, and leaves us begging for more Them Evils. Whether you’re ready to rock or ready to party, Them Evils ALWAYS has you covered.

Check out what David had to say about the inspiration behind the new single…

‘Where Ya Gonna Crash Tonight?’ is a song that reflects on our experiences while on tour. There’s always a level of uncertainty when waking up in a bus and heading to the next city to play a show. You never know where a night is going to take you when you are having a good time and living in the moment. But there is an inevitable question that comes up sooner or later - “Where Ya Gonna Crash Tonight?”. The lyrics in the song give details on what we go through on a daily basis living the “Rock N’ Roll” lifestyle that people daydream about.”

Rock My Soul ft. Andrew Hagar

Rebecca Potzner

The virus may have brought a halt to a lot of things but it’s not stopping us from sharing the best in new Rock nor is it stopping Andrew Hagar from learning new tricks and sharing his work. “While self-isolating, I’ve taken it upon myself to become an absolutely savage harmonica player,” he shares. Oh, and he’s just released his first single, ‘Judgement Day’….

Right off the bat, the song’s cadence is strong and powerful. Just a few notes in and I feel empowered to take on whatever is in my path. Hagar’s deep vocals and humanist songwriting make for a mighty duo. The story continues and then the guitar solo comes in; like the smoke trail of incense burning it wraps around and it feeds deep into the soul. The steady hard-hitting drum beat adds only builds to the energy. Feel it for yourself and listen to to ‘Judgement Day’ on the number on spot of this month’s edition of Rock My Soul.

PS. Andrew - Can’t wait to hear that harmonica shine through in future releases. Until then we’ll be cranking up ‘Judgement Day’ on repeat.

ANDREW HAGAR

“Hagar, who’s arrived with a razor-sharp voice and a guitar he shreds the hell out of, has a lot of life experience to share. Andrew’s noon your ordinary rocker - his songs yield a scabrous roots/ Americana style, embellished with threads of Delta Blues, psychedelia and outlaw country.”

Rock My Soul ft. OF LIMBO [Interview + Playlist]

Rebecca Potzner

Though there is no doubt that we are in unprecedented times, there is NEVER a bad time for new music. Truthfully, it’s what’s getting us through this madness. If you’re new here, the Rock My Soul playlist exists to share music from new, up and coming artists feeding our soul with pure ROCK N’ ROLL.

The April 2020 edition of Rock My Soul features OF LIMBO, a band that caught our attention with their unique sound, their passion and drive for the music, and quite honestly this video. OF LIMBO is in the middle of slowly releasing their EP, Nothing But Now, and have just released a new song this week that we think you’re going to LOVE. Get to know the band and give My Kind of Girl a listen on Rock My Soul below…

OF LIMBO

“Brothers Jake and Luke Davies were raised in Melbourne, Australia. Growing up on rock ’n’ roll, they developed a passion for playing music together, one that would lead them to Long Beach, California. OF LIMBO pride themselves on making every show a party. Their high-energy performances create an electric atmosphere that is infectious, making it impossible not to have fun. They don't follow whatever happens to be the current trend, but instead have a refreshingly unique hard-rock sound.”

Q: Introduce us to the band…

Jake (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar) and Luke Davies (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Rob Graveley (Bass Guitar/Vocals), Christopher "Bug" Bristol (Drums).

Q: You're celebrating 5 years as a band. What's one thing you've learned through the years/One of your favorite memories?

Luke: Back when we first started, we would hire old school buses to pick us and fans up from Long Beach and take us to Hollywood for shows. We'd put a keg on board, pack everyone in and have an absolute rager on the way to and from the show, blasting rock all night. It was such an energetic time, we were writing together, playing clubs that our idols started at, and constantly partying. Definitely one of my fondest memories of being in this band.

Jake: My fondest memories are of before we even formed as a band. Me and Luke would have “Friday night write nights” in our little beach apartment. We would get nicely toasted at the bar then come back and write songs all night long. We would never remember them until we listened back on our phones to them hung over in bed the next day. It was a time where the realities of the music industry were not yet impeding anything. There was limitless potential and an energy that can never be captured again. We have a song about that exact time and idea that we will get around to recording sooner than later. “Just the way it was”

Q: My Kind of Girl is the second single off of your newest EP. Obviously inspired by women - but did anything or anyone in particular spark the creation of this song?

The song is simply our way of honoring women. A love of women of all shapes and sizes, colors and creeds. Loving them for their differences, what makes them unique.

Q: Nothing But Now and My Kind of Girl are two songs you really want to crank up and rock out to, in their own rights. What can we expect from the rest of the EP? When will those be released?

Diversity. We'll be releasing the next song, "Somebody Else", in mid May sometime. It's much more 80s feeling than straight rock, much moodier. Think Nightrider / Miami Vice kind of vibe. "Mettle" is the last track of the album. We've been working this song since the band first started. We actually released the first iteration of it on our debut, self-produced EP back in 2015, but have always felt we needed to do it justice with proper production.

Q: Anything else you want to share with the world?

We head back into the studio with Mike Pepe in May to bang out a couple more tunes, that should be released later this year. We'll also be releasing videos to accompany each song on the EP. Checkout the first one we released for "Nothing But Now" (here) and keep your eyes peeled for the releases of the rest.

ARTISTS FEATURED: OF LIMBO, Runaway, The Moon City Masters, Wild Planes, The Josephines, Hush Money, RōZY, The Blue Stones, Lovely World, KALEO, WD-HAN, The Violent Mindfield, Moriah Formica, The Heroine, Sirsy, Little Triggers, + MORE!

Rock My Soul ft. Goodbye June

Rebecca Potzner

Ever listen to a band and believe in their sound SO much you just assume that everyone else knows about them? That’s how I feel about Nashville’s Goodbye June. Comprised of cousins Landon Milbourn, Brandon Qualkenbush, and Tyler Baker, Goodbye June is an incredible addition to the current rock and roll revival.

Reflecting on 2019, there were a few albums that made the rotation quite frequently and Goodbye June’s Community Inn was no exception. The fusion of Landon’s unique raspy vocals, with classic guitar riffs, a dash of southern blues , and feel good vibes kept me coming back for more - 12 solid tracks that I found myself listening to over and over, without skipping one here and there. Out those 12, you’ll find three on this edition of Rock My Soul. Get your rock on with Rolling Off My Tongue, roll down the windows and enjoy the view with Secrets In The Sunset, and get a little spontaneous with Live In The Now.

Now, as many of you have heard, Nashville was hit by a Tornado this past week and many have been effected including Goodbye June’s Brandon Qualkenbush. Thankfully he is safe, however his home was completely destroyed by the Tornado. Please consider helping out by donating here.

GOODBYE JUNE

“Fusing hard rock licks with deep South blues and gospel swing, the three cousins (namely Landon Milbourn [vocals], Brandon Qualkenbush [rhythm guitar, backing vocals] and Tyler Baker [lead guitar]) are fuelled by their desire to craft timeless, catchy and anthemic rock songs. The band formed after the death of Tyler’s brother in June (hence the band name), vowing to honour his memory with their soulful and life-affirming sound.”
